Ex Ante // Ex Post
This show was the product of an ongoing collaborative effort between myself and photographer & designer Michael Luis Diaz. These images are the result of Diaz’s visual investigation into the nuanced and varied physical surfaces created by the combination of clay, heat, time and mineral transformation. Diaz is utilizing a digital camera to capture multiple images within each frame as well as a series of post-image editing processes to render minute details in crisp and defined resolution.
By scouring the landscapes held within the surface of these objects, Diaz seeks out and selects sections that, when made visible at a new scale, allow the beauty of nuance to present itself in a fresh, bold and revealing format.
Ex Ante // Ex Post translates to the time After and Before an event. These works aim to elevate & provide pause, reflection and celebration of the transformative nature of process & event. These objects were born through a primitive form of labor. The act of firing clay in a solid-fuel kiln requires an intentional investment of time & energy, and clay changes through a very analog form of physical transformation. By pairing of these tactile and modestly scaled ceramic works alongside large format visual explorations of their cracks, crevasses, peaks, valleys and earthen hues, we hope to provide some form of time to pause, with new visual address, and look directly into the face of nuance, dialing in on the microcosm of each objects surface and providing a new voice for the nature of the transformative process that makes these objects what they are.
